In a shocking case of alleged miscalculation, a farmer in Uttar Pradesh’s Basti district received an electricity bill amounting to a staggering ₹7.33 crore. Milhu, a resident of Ramaya village, had taken an electricity connection for his home in 2014 and had been regularly paying his bills until 2019.

Until a few months ago, Milhu’s electricity bill stood at ₹75,000. However, the sudden jump to ₹7.33 crore left him and his family in utter disbelief. The farmer possesses receipts confirming his past payments, proving that he has been consistently clearing his dues.

Farmer’s distress and financial woes

Expressing his distress, Milhu said, “When I saw the bill, I was completely shaken. I felt like I was going to have a heart attack. I have a daughter, and I worry about her marriage. Even if I sell all my property, I won’t be able to pay this bill.”The massive bill has caused severe financial and emotional turmoil for the farmer.

Despite multiple appeals to senior officials of the electricity department, Milhu’s issue remains unresolved. He has approached authorities several times, seeking rectification of the error, but has received no concrete response or relief so far.

Economic hardship and urgent need for resolution

Milhu, who comes from a poor financial background, lacks the resources to clear such an exorbitant bill. His immediate concerns include not only his electricity bill but also arranging funds for his daughter’s wedding. The situation has become a significant burden on him and his family.

The incident highlights the need for systemic improvements in the electricity department to prevent such errors from occurring in the future. Milhu hopes for a swift resolution to the matter so that he can focus on his family’s well-being rather than battling bureaucratic inefficiencies.
