Former Member of Parliament Bahubali Dhananjay Singh has been handed a seven-year prison sentence by the Jaunpur court for his involvement in a kidnapping and extortion case. The court found Dhananjay guilty of kidnapping the project manager of the Namami Gange initiative and subsequently threatening him, demanding extortion. The ADJ court of Jaunpur has also imposed a fine of 50 thousand rupees on the former MP.

Special Judge MPMLA Court Sharad Tripathi announced Dhananjay Singh's guilty verdict on Tuesday. This ruling marks the first instance of punishment for the history-sheeter Dhananjay Singh, who faces numerous other criminal charges.

Dhananjay Singh, a former MLA and MP elected multiple times on the BSP ticket, had aspirations to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. However, his prospects have been thwarted by this legal setback.

The case stems from an incident on May 10, 2020, when Abhinav Singhal, the project manager of Namami Gange, filed a complaint against Dhananjay Singh and his accomplice Santosh Vikram. Singhal alleged that he was abducted by several of Dhananjay's associates, including Vikram, and brought before Dhananjay himself.

It was reported that Dhananjay Singh, brandishing a firearm, coerced Singhal into using substandard materials in road construction and demanded extortion. Dhananjay was promptly arrested by the police on the same day and subsequently incarcerated.
