Encroachment Drive in CHD (Social Media)
National News: In a significant step toward making Chandigarh a slum-free city, the administration on Thursday launched a massive eviction drive in the Adarsh Colony area of Sector 53-54. Around 12 acres of government land were cleared during the operation, which had been home to hundreds of underprivileged families living in makeshift huts for years. Authorities claim that the land was illegally occupied and that clearing it was essential for planned urban development.
The operation began early in the morning with a massive deployment of resources. More than 1,000 police personnel, dozens of JCB machines, dumpers, and six ambulances were stationed at the site, signaling the administration’s readiness for any potential resistance. However, as bulldozers moved in, most residents silently watched their homes crumble. Some wept quietly, while others stood in shock, unable to process the sudden loss of everything they owned.
During the eviction, a sudden fire broke out in one of the huts, creating panic at the site. Fortunately, no one was inside the hut at the time, and no injuries or casualties occurred. The fire was brought under control swiftly, but it symbolized the deeper pain and trauma of the affected families—people whose lives were uprooted in a matter of minutes.
One of the most heart-wrenching moments came when an elderly, disabled woman in a wheelchair broke down in tears as her home was demolished. She said her husband is also disabled, and now they have no shelter left. Similar stories emerged from other families—people who had built a fragile existence over decades and were now left to face an uncertain future on the streets.
Chandigarh’s Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav stated that the operation was not just about removing illegal structures but was necessary for the planned growth of the city and rule of law. He emphasized that strict action against encroachment is essential to keep public development projects on track. However, the administration did not provide any concrete information regarding rehabilitation or relief plans for the displaced families—raising serious questions about the human aspect of such actions.
