Delhi-NCR Gets Much-Needed Respite as Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms Break Scorching Heat Spell (X)

New Delhi: Heavy rain and thunderstorms lashed several parts of Delhi-NCR on Thursday, bringing much-needed respite from days of scorching heat. Earlir, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for two days.  

What did the IMD say?

Visuals show gusty winds in parts of Noida with IMD forecasting 'partly cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers' will continue in the city till June 6.

The IMD also said that there is a possibilty of hail at isolated places in Delhi.

The IMD described the thunderstorm activity as "very likely" and advised residents to follow guidelines issued by the Delhi disaster management authority and other concerned agencies.

What about the monsoon?

Meanwhile, the southwest (summer) monsoon has arrived in Kerala, IMD said.

"Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-20cm) is very likely over Kerala & Karnataka, and isolated heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu, and during the next 7 days. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over northeast India during the next 5-6 days, the weather department said in a post on X.

"Moderate to Severe Thunderstorm activity with wind speed up to 50-60 kmph is likely over many parts of Northwest, Central & East India and South Peninsular India during the next 2-3 days of the week," it added.

What about other states?

In addition to Delhi, the weather took a drastic turn in Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and Faridabad, causing temperatures to drop significantly. The IMD has stated that winds can blow at speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour during the yellow alert in Delhi. 

The IMD has issued a 'yellow alert' for Delhi on June 4 and 5. Traffic has slowed due to waterlogging on roads in Delhi-NCR.
