Mumbai: Amboli police in Mumbai arrested three suspects who allegedly attacked two elderly women with an iron pestle during a robbery attempt in Andheri West. The victims are Shobha Rekhari, 74, and her sister-in-law Bina Bhatt, 67, who were assaulted in their seventh-floor apartment in the Gypsy Rose Building, Shastri Nagar, on January 7.
The assault happened between 3:30 PM and 4:50 PM when Rekhari and Bhatt were home. Because the family's permanent servant was out, the family had employed a casual domestic helper, Ajit Mukhiya. As Rekhari lay resting in her bedroom, she heard Bhatt scream and came out to see Ajit assault Bhatt with an iron pestle. She tried to intervene and was attacked. Both women were severely injured and taken to Kokilaben Hospital by the local people, who also informed the Amboli police.
Amboli police, led by Senior Police Inspector Sadashiv Nikam and Police Inspector Vasant Devkate, set up several teams and began tracking down the accused. It was later found that Ajit Mukhiya, along with Saroj Mukhiya and Vishnu Mukhiya, had escaped to Hyderabad. The police followed these two culprits with the help of CCTV footage and technical data from Hyderabad railway station to catch them and bring them back to Mumbai.
Three people in their early 20s have been picked up by police in connection with the robbery: Ajit Mukhiya, Saroj Mukhiya, and Vishnu Mukhiya all hail from Darbhanga in Bihar. Cops confirmed the trio is family and that it was Saroj who had orchestrated the robbery.
"Saroj planned the robbery, and while it was under way, it was Ajit who attacked the elderly women. We have found ornaments and money with the suspects," said a cop.
The accused have been remanded to police custody by the Andheri court till 15 January. A case of robbery, assault, among others, will be heard because the police needs more information, which they seek by further investigation.
