LPG supply to stop for homes that refuse PNG where available: Government (X)

New Delhi: As the country struggle with the LPF shortage due the conflict in Middle East, the government on Wednesday said that that cooking gas LPG supply to households will be discontinued if consumers fail to switch to piped natural gas where such connectivity is available.

What did the government say about LPG?

The Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on Wednesday issued a new directive stating that cooking gas LPG supply to households will be discontinued if consumers do not switch to piped natural gas in areas where PNG connectivity is already available.

What is the motive of this?

The directive aims at to increasing the speed of transitioning from cylinder  to pipeline-based fuel, that will reduce the dependence on a single supply channel.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has notified the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution (Through Laying, Building, Operation and Expansion of Pipelines and Other Facilities) Order, 2026, aimed at accelerating pipeline infrastructure, easing approvals and promoting a shift from LPG to PNG to strengthen energy security.

According to the order issued on Tuesday, the LPG supply "shall cease after three months" if a household does not opt for PNG despite availability.

The provision, however, allows continuation where it is "technically infeasible" to provide a piped connection, subject to a no-objection certificate.

What did Oil Secretary say?

Regarding the order, Oil Secretary Neeraj Mittal in the post on X said that "a crisis (has been) turned into an opportunity" through the ease of doing business reforms.

Will things happen quickly now?

The order, which is issued under the Essential Commodities Act, seeks to fast-track pipeline infrastructure by easing approvals, standardising charges and ensuring time-bound permissions.

The authorities have also been banned from imposing additional charges beyond specified.

In housing areas, access must be granted within three working days, while last-mile PNG connections are to be provided within 48 hours. Applications for connectivity cannot be rejected.
