Holy Dip at Sangam Witnesses Record-Breaking Devotion (x/@theprayagtiwari)
The Mahakumbh Mela 2025, the world’s largest religious gathering, is underway in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. On Monday, over 10 million devotees took a holy dip at the Sangam—the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers—on the occasion of Paush Poornima. As Makar Sankranti dawns on Tuesday, January 14, the first Amrit Snan is set to attract an even greater number of devotees.
The Amrit Snan is a major milestone in the Mahakumbh. This time it's different because it comes after the grand Pran Pratishtha of Lord Ram Lalla in Ayodhya. Akharas, considered more important monastic orders, take the centre stage of this function. According to Mahant Ravindra Puri, president of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad, it was 5:30 a.m. when Amrit Snan started, and among the prominent Akharas that led the ritual were Shri Panchayati Akhara Mahanirvani and Shri Shambhu Panchayati Atal Akhara.
The Uttar Pradesh government has organized an event on the most gigantic scale by converting more than 10,000 acres into an abode of spirit. The complex contains 0.15 million toilets, 15,000 sanitation workers, and 0.15 million tent houses for the pilgrims. There is also advanced security arrangement, such as 2,750 crowd-monitoring cameras and 24/7 ICCC surveillance around the clock.
Nine police teams accompanied by paramilitary forces are managing the bathing time of all 13 Akharas. According to Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Vaibhav Krishna, Sangam area has been divided into sections for the easy passage of Akharas and devotees.
The central idea of Mahakumbh 2025 is sustainability. There are 69,000 LED lights which comprise solar hybrid streetlights. In addition to these, other digital innovations involve 10 lost-and-found centers and 25,000 volunteers working on-ground. Parking facility spreads over an area of 1,800 hectares to take care of vehicle rush.
The festival of Makar Sankranti, marking the Sun's transition to the Northern Hemisphere, adds a deeper spiritual fervor to the Mahakumbh. Pilgrims, seers, and Naga Sadhus gather to celebrate the divine occasion, reaffirming the festival's timeless appeal.
