Viral: The Mahakumbh Mela, the world's largest religious gathering, is currently underway in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Millions of devotees from all over the world are converging at the sacred site to take a dip in the Sangam-the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. Amidst the vibrant spiritual atmosphere, the festival offers encounters with a diverse array of ascetics, including Naga Babas, Aghori Sadhus, and revered religious leaders. However, one ascetic has captured the nation's attention. He is an alumnus of IIT, turned sage and popularly referred to as the "IITian Baba".

The IITian Baba's unconventional path

During an interview, IITian Baba Abhay Singh spoke of his journey from academics to asceticism. Singh said that after studying Aerospace Engineering at IIT Bombay, he turned to spirituality. The interviewer was amazed at Singh's command over speech and questioned him about his education. Singh provided his credentials and narrated the journey wherein he has explored himself in search of life's meaning.

Singh explained that his academic pursuits had always been intertwined with a search for purpose. “Even while studying engineering, I took philosophy courses—Post Modernism, Socrates, Plato—to understand the meaning of life,” he shared. After completing his engineering degree, Singh pursued a Master’s in Design, but his growing interest in spirituality ultimately led him to renounce material pursuits. “If you keep pursuing knowledge, where do you reach? This is where you reach, Singh said with a reference to his spiritual enlightenment.

The interview has gone viral on social media with people showing awe and interest in the story. Many have complimented Singh on choosing knowledge and spiritual fulfillment above material gain. "This stage is the best stage," he said summing up his philosophy of life.
The Mahakumbh has been going on since January 13 and will continue until February 26, testifying to India's spiritual heritage. In the case of the IITian Baba, the festival's unique ability to bring together people from all walks of life who are united in their pursuit of faith and self-discovery has been exemplified.
