Maharashtra: Ajit Pawar's Wife Sunetra Pawar Takes Oath As Deputy CM, Becomes First Woman To Hold The Post

Mumbai: Sunetra Pawar, the wife of late Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Ajit Pawa, took oath as Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra in Mumbai on Saturday. Sunetra Pawar thus became the first woman Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra after the oath taking ceremony at Mumbai's Lok Bhavan.

Sunetra Pawarwas administered the oath of office and secrecy by Maharashtra Governor Acharya Devvrat. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, along with all senior leaders and ministers of the NCP and BJP, were present at the Lok Bhavan during the ceremony.

What next for Sunetra Pawar?

Ajit Pawar had passed away unexpectedly in a plane crash in Baramati on January 28. Sunetra Pawar was also elected as the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislative party before the oath-taking ceremony. She will now contest the by-election from the Baramati seat, which fell vacant after Ajit Pawar's death. Before the oath-taking, Sunetra Pawar resigned from her Rajya Sabha seat. According to sources, the NCP will send her elder son, Parth Pawar, to the Rajya Sabha in her place.

After being elected as the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party legislative party, Sunetra Pawar paid tribute to her late husband Ajit Pawar's photograph at the official residence, Devgiri Bungalow. 

Who is Sunetra Pawar?

Sunetra Pawar is the sister of senior NCP leader Padamsinh Patil. She hails from Dharashiv district. She spent her childhood in Ter, Dharashiv. According to Sunetra Pawar, her father was a freedom fighter, and therefore she had an inclination towards social service and politics.
