2,000 Punjab Villages Submerged (Social media)
Flood Fury in North India: Many states of North India are facing the devastation of floods and rains. The condition of Punjab is the worst. Thousands of people were affected due to the rising water level of the Sutlej and Beas rivers. Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) Chairman Manoj Tripathi said that this year the water level in Pong Dam reached a record level. In 1988, 7.9 BCM of water came into the dam, whereas this time this figure went up to 11.7 BCM. About two thousand villages were hit by floods.
Tripathi said that if there were no dams like Bhakra and Pong, Punjab would have been flooded since June itself. He also said that according to the Meteorological Department, there is no possibility of heavy rain till September 15.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will soon visit flood-affected states, including Punjab, Himachal, and Uttarakhand. Due to continuous rain and landslides, roads were broken, bridges were washed away, and there was loss of life in these states.
For the first time in Haryana, the army was deployed to deal with floods. 80 soldiers were engaged in relief work in Bahadurgarh of Jhajjar district. The water level of Hathinikund Barrage in Yamunanagar came below the danger mark after 106 hours.
Landslides and rains have increased difficulties in Himachal. The Jhalogi tunnel in the Mandi district collapsed. Three bodies were found from the debris in Kullu. A car crashed after a rock fell on the Chamba-Tisa road, killing two youths. 1087 roads and four national highways are closed in the state.
524 Mani Mahesh pilgrims stranded in Bharmour of Chamba district were evacuated safely with the help of the Air Force. Chinook helicopters carried out relief work by making 12 flights. During this, three bodies were also recovered.
The water level of the Jhelum River in the Kashmir Valley has started decreasing, but Wular Lake in North Kashmir is posing a threat due to rising water. People in the lower areas of Bandipora were sent to safer places. The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has been closed for nine days, and the Vaishno Devi Yatra remained halted for the 11th day as well.
Chardham Yatra is starting again after five days in Uttarakhand. However, the Gangotri and Yamunotri routes are still blocked. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert in Dehradun, Bageshwar, and Nainital.
In the Dausa district of Rajasthan, the wall of the Moral dam broke due to filling, and villages got submerged. In Ajmer, thousands of houses got flooded due to the breaking of the pond wall. At the same time, there is a danger of lake bursting due to rapidly melting glaciers in Arunachal Pradesh. Scientists have intensified monitoring of the lakes in the Tawang area.
