National News:  Photos of Sonam Wangchuk with Nobel Prize winner Mohammed Yunus have gone viral. Critics claim these images prove his links with Bangladesh politics. One of the photos also shows Yunus with PM Modi, which Angmo highlighted to question the criticism. She asked why meeting Yunus is acceptable for the Prime Minister but not for her husband. These pictures have become the center of heated social media discussions. Many are debating whether Wangchuk is unfairly targeted.

Wife questions double standards openly

Gitanjali Angmo, herself an activist, strongly defended Wangchuk. She said his work and speeches have been misinterpreted by agencies. She pointed out that Yunus is a respected economist and global figure, not an enemy. Angmo stressed that her husband’s role has always been about education, environment, and innovation. She accused critics of trying to label him unfairly. Her public defense has gained support from many of his followers.

Social media fuels conspiracy claims

Some users on social media accused Wangchuk of working with forces that ousted Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh. They linked his comments on protests in Nepal and Bangladesh to recent violence in Ladakh. Agencies allege he inspired the September 24 demonstrations where four people died. However, supporters say this is an attempt to silence a peaceful activist. The narrative on social media remains divided, with strong voices on both sides.

Arrest under strict security law

Sonam Wangchuk has been detained under the National Security Act (NSA). This law allows authorities to keep him in custody for up to 12 months without trial. Currently, he is lodged in Jodhpur prison. His arrest has shocked many in Ladakh and beyond. Critics of the move say this is an excessive step against someone known for non-violent work. His supporters demand his immediate release, calling the charges politically motivated.

Leh tense under heavy curfew

After the protests, Leh remains under curfew. Streets are calm but the atmosphere is tense. People are largely staying indoors as security forces patrol the area. Shops and schools remain closed. Locals are worried about how long restrictions will continue. While peace has returned to the surface, anger still brews among people. The community feels its voice is being suppressed.

Old speech used against Wangchuk

Authorities also questioned Wangchuk over a speech he gave in Pakistan earlier this year. Angmo clarified it was at a United Nations climate conference organized with media partners. She said critics were twisting facts to build a false case. She even asked why India can play cricket with Pakistan, but her husband is questioned for attending a UN event. According to her, there is no financial wrongdoing or hidden agenda.

Timeline of controversial photographs

The photo of Wangchuk with Yunus dates back to 2020. It was taken at the British High Commission in Dhaka, when Hasina was still in power. Yunus later met PM Modi in April 2025 at a summit in Bangkok. Angmo posted these images to highlight the double standards. Ties between India and Bangladesh have been tense since Hasina’s ouster in 2024. Delhi has repeatedly raised concerns about minority safety under Yunus’s caretaker government.
