Will Mahua Moitra join the BJP? TMC MP gives strong reply (Image X @ANI)
Kolkata: Following the West Bengal Assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) suffered a major split, with over 20 MPs breaking away to join a party supporting the NDA. In the Assembly as well, more than 60 MLAs rebelled against Mamata Banerjee, forming a separate faction. For some time, there were daily reports of MPs or leaders distancing themselves from Mamata Banerjee.
Amidst this, TMC's firebrand MP Mahua Moitra also praised Suvendu Adhikari, sparking speculation about whether she too might rebel against Mamata Banerjee and join the BJP. Moitra has now personally addressed these speculations in detail.
In an interview with BBC Hindi, when asked if she would ever join the BJP, Moitra stated that she had dedicated her youth and her entire life to entering politics. She explained that her sole objective is to restore the secular India of her birth—a place where everyone lived together in harmony. She asserted that the BJP has spread communalism, a force she vowed to oppose until her dying breath; as long as she is alive, she will continue the fight to oust the BJP.
In the same interview, Mahua Moitra also praised Suvendu Adhikari. She recalled their past association and described Suvendu as a good friend. She mentioned that when they were in the same party, he had supported her significantly. When she contested the election from Karimpur, he was the only one who came to campaign for her. He would provide whatever assistance she needed.
She recounted how she had cried all night after missing out on a ticket for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, and at that time, Suvendu was the only one who stood by her, reassuring her by saying, "No, sister, I am here for you." She noted that while they are now in different parties and do not speak to each other, that bond remains.
Later, when the matter garnered significant headlines, Moitra issued a clarification, stating that certain remarks from her recent media interview had been misrepresented.
Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra launched a scathing attack on the BJP government on Friday over the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and a controversial bill concerning law and order. She alleged that attempts are being made to eliminate the opposition through intimidation and divisive, harsh policies.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting at Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee's Kalighat residence, Moitra alleged that the BJP government has launched a campaign aimed at weakening the Trinamool at the grassroots level by preventing its workers from holding meetings and rallies.
