Dhaka: Citing security reasons, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has requested the ICC to hold its T20 World Cup matches in Sri Lanka instead of India. This demand was formally sent on January 4, after which ICC started considering it.
The matter heated up when IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders was instructed to release Mustafizur Rahman from the team. Mustafizur was bought in the auction for Rs 9.20 crore but was later dropped from the team.
It was said that BCCI took this step after opposition from some organizations in India. These organizations said that amid reports of attacks on Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, no Bangladeshi player should be allowed to play in the IPL.
BCB expressed strong displeasure over this decision and linked it to the honor of the players. After this the matter directly reached the interim government of Bangladesh, which instructed the Cricket Board to talk to ICC.
The country's sports advisor, Asif Nazrul, issued a statement strongly criticizing the decision. He said that insulting Bangladesh and its players will not be accepted under any circumstances. He also indicated that banning the telecast of IPL is being considered.
ICC has not taken any final decision yet, but it is being said that the safety of the players is being considered of utmost importance. On this basis, Bangladesh's demand is being seriously considered.
If ICC accepts Bangladesh's appeal, Bangladesh and Pakistan can play all their T20 World Cup matches in Sri Lanka. Due to this, changes in the program and organizing arrangements of the tournament are possible.
BCB says that it has informed ICC about the entire incident, and now a reply is expected soon. The ICC's decision in the coming days will decide where the World Cup matches will be played and in which direction the controversy will go.
