Hyderabad: Rishabh Pant led from the front with a captain's knock as Lucknow Super Giants defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by five wickets in a thrilling Indian Premier League (IPL) contest on Sunday. Rishabh Pant produced a steady innings, remaining unbeaten on 68 runs off 50 deliveries to spearhead the Super Giants' chase.
Asked to bat first, Sunrisers Hyderabad posted a total of 156/9. In reply, the Lucknow team successfully chased down this target in the final over, losing 5 wickets in the process. This marks the Lucknow team's first victory of the season, while for Sunrisers, it is their second defeat in three matches.
Lucknow captain Rishabh Pant, who had been struggling with a prolonged patch of poor form, played a magnificent innings and scored a brilliant fifty while chasing in this match. Pant did not open the innings; instead, he came out to bat at number 3. He completed his half-century off 43 balls. In the final over, Lucknow required 9 runs to win. Rishabh Pant all but sealed the victory for Lucknow by smashing two fours off the first two deliveries bowled by Jaydev Unadkat. Subsequently, on the fifth ball of the over, Pant hit another four to guide his team across the finish line. Pant remained unbeaten on 68 runs off 50 balls, an innings that included 9 fours.
Apart from Pant, Aiden Markram—who opened the innings for Lucknow—played a knock of 45 runs off 27 balls. His innings featured 6 fours and 2 sixes. Additionally, Abdul Samad contributed 16 runs, while Ayush Badoni scored 12 runs.
Earlier in the match, following a sensational opening spell by Mohammed Shami, Sunrisers Hyderabad managed to post a total of 156 runs for the loss of 9 wickets, thanks to an aggressive century partnership between Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy. Struggling at 35 for the loss of four wickets within the first 10 overs, the Hyderabad team saw Klaasen (62 runs off 41 balls) and Reddy (56 runs off 33 balls) adopt the strategy that "attack is the best defense." During a record-breaking 116-run partnership for the fifth wicket—achieved in just 63 balls—the duo smashed a combined total of seven sixes.
With the rapid dismissal of both batsmen shortly thereafter, Lucknow regained their stranglehold on the match and successfully restricted the host team to a total under 160 runs. Earlier in the innings, Shami had delivered a magnificent spell, taking two wickets for a mere 9 runs across four overs—which included 18 dot balls—thereby completely derailing Hyderabad's start. During his spell, top-order batsmen Travis Head (7), Abhishek Sharma (0), and captain Ishan Kishan (1) were dismissed cheaply and returned to the pavilion.
Aggressive batsman Liam Livingstone also fell victim to the brilliant wicketkeeping skills of Lucknow captain Rishabh Pant. The momentum of the match appeared to shift between the 11th and 15th overs of the innings, as the Sunrisers plundered 79 runs in that five-over period. Leg-spinner Digvesh Rathi, who had conceded only 10 runs in his first two overs, ended up leaking 36 runs in his subsequent two overs. Indian pacers Avesh Khan and Prince Yadav looked effective in the initial overs but later lost their line and length—a lapse that Klaasen and Reddy capitalized on to the fullest. While the first 10 overs had yielded only one six and one four, this dynamic duo went on to smash seven sixes and eight fours.
