Major Controversy In PSL 2026 As Star Player Faces Ball Tampering Allegations

Islamabad: In the sixth match of PSL 2026, a serious controversy of ball tampering broke out in the match played between Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings, which completely changed the course of the match. The controversy erupted when the on-field umpires checked the ball just before the last over and found that its position had been changed. The result was that Karachi Kings batsman Abbas Afridi hit consecutive fours on the second and third balls of the last over and gave the team a thrilling four-wicket victory. 

Did the incident before the last over change the course of the match?

The controversy started when Haris Rauf came to bowl the last over and Karachi Kings needed 14 runs to win. Earlier, Lahore captain Shaheen Shah Afridi, Fakhar Zaman and Haris Rauf – all three were standing together on the bowler's run-up and were taking the ball in their hands one by one. This is a common thing in cricket, but umpire Faisal Afridi noticed it and asked to check the ball.  The decision was given after a long discussion between umpire Faisal Afridi and Bangladesh's second on-field umpire Sharfuddaula.

Did the umpires confirm ball tampering?

The Pakistan Cricket Board said in an official statement: "Fakhar Zaman of Lahore Qalandars has been charged with Level-3 under Section 2.14 of the Code of Conduct, which is a breach of Article 41.3 of the PSL Playing Conditions. Artificially changing the condition of the ball is an offense under this Article."  Five penalty runs were imposed on Lahore on the field and the ball was immediately changed.

Did this penalty make the road easier for Karachi?

This action of Fakhar Zaman cost Lahore Qalandars a five-run penalty and the match. The controversy deepened when, at the crucial juncture of the match, the 14 runs Karachi needed in the last over were reduced to only 9 after the penalty.  Experts also note that the introduction of the new hard ball along with the penalties made it easier for Karachi's batsmen to play.

How serious is the case against Fakhar Zaman?

According to the official statement of PCB, in the disciplinary hearing conducted under the leadership of match referee Roshan Mahanama, Fakhar Zaman vehemently denied the allegations leveled against him. Another hearing has been scheduled within the next 48 hours, after which the match referee will give his final decision. If found guilty, the minimum punishment for the level-3 charge is a one-match ban. 

Will high-definition footage be examined in the next 48 hours?

Now the question is that many players touched the ball, then why is only one accused? Critics say umpires' subjective decisions in pressure moments in T20 cricket can influence outcomes and the case is rekindling the debate over whether technology such as zoom and slow-motion ball tracking should be made mandatory.

Is Fakhar Zaman's career at stake?

This question is also arising in the minds of some experts that when Lahore was winning comfortably, then what was the need for this action? The ball was already soft and this move backfired. The work of Karachi's batsmen became easier with the availability of the new hard ball. Comparisons are being made on social media with Australia's 'Sandpapergate' of 2018 and the reputation of Pakistan cricket is once again in the dock.

Are the team and captain Shaheen Afridi satisfied with this decision?

Captain Shaheen Shah Afridi expressed disappointment at the decision but admitted that he did not know the real reason for the allegation at the time. Shaheen said the team would review the footage and have "internal discussions" but also acknowledged that the penalty decision could no longer be overturned. l In the same match, Karachi Kings fast bowler Hasan Ali was also fined 10 percent of his match fee for Level-1 code of conduct violation, which he accepted.
