Technology News: Apple has responded to reports that some iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air display models were showing scratches. The company says the marks are not real scratches but come from old store equipment. Apple explained that worn MagSafe display stands in stores can leave residue on demo phones, which may look like scratches but can be easily wiped off. The company is now replacing these old stands in Apple and carrier stores to prevent the problem from happening again.

Social Media Reacts to Scratch Claims

The controversy, dubbed "scratchgate" on social media, began after Bloomberg reported that iPhone 17 Pro models in darker colors, like Deep Blue, were showing wear just days after release. Similar marks were noticed on iPhone Air units in Space Black and on some older iPhone 16 models.

Camera bump durability still questioned

Apple’s explanation did not cover concerns about the iPhone 17 Pro camera bump. YouTuber JerryRigEverything showed that the raised edges around the camera can get damaged easily, with the anodized coating chipping when scratched with a coin. Apple said its anodization process follows industry standards and is “very hard,” but admitted users might see minor scratches from normal use. The company also said the camera bump edges behave similarly to other anodized aluminum Apple products.

Aluminum design returns with iPhone 17 Pro

The iPhone 17 Pro returns to an aluminum frame after the titanium design of the iPhone 16 Pro series. Aluminum helps improve performance and battery life but is naturally less resistant to scratches compared to titanium.
