After Viral Clip, Japanese Zoo Explains Story Behind Punch the Resilient Monkey (OpenAi)
Ichikawa (Japan): A short video has suddenly brought a zoo in Japan to the center of international debate. In a clip viral on social media, a small monkey is seen being pulled by some bigger monkeys. Many people called it mistreatment of animals and expressed their displeasure. Following the growing reaction, the zoo administration had to issue a public statement. They say the video was taken out of context and the incident, which was interpreted as violence, is part of the monkeys' normal social behavior.
In this video of about a few seconds, a small Japanese macaque is seen falling on the ground, after which two big monkeys are seen pulling it. The nervous movements of the little monkey made the audience restless. The video was viewed millions of times and without knowing the background it was termed as cruelty.
According to the zoo, this is a six-month-old macaque, whom the staff calls 'Punch'. His mother did not accept him after birth. Since then he has been looked after by caring staff. Recently, the process of gradually including him in the group of other monkeys has been started.
The administration says that such a tussle while joining a group is not considered unusual. In primate species the social structure is strong and there may be a mild physical reaction to make the new member understand his or her place. Officials claim that the incident lasted only a few moments and was blown out of proportion.

The zoo has clarified that it was examined by veterinarians after the incident. There were no signs of any serious injury. He is eating and drinking normally and is active. Staff reported that even after the video, he appeared comfortable with his toys and his surroundings.
Scenes involving small animals often evoke an emotional response. Many users shared the video and expressed concern and demanded action. And some animal lovers raised questions about whether he was included in the group too soon. However, some people also said that natural behavior should not be judged by human eyes.
The management has appealed that conclusions should not be drawn after watching the incomplete clip. He says that the social behavior of animals is complex and a broader context is necessary to understand it. The team of employees is constantly monitoring the condition of the punch.
Animal behavior experts say that adjustment of small monkeys into a group is a process, which may appear stressful in the beginning. Unless there is serious injury or persistent aggression, this is considered normal behavior.
The zoo has indicated that if the need is felt, Punch will be kept in temporary isolation and gradually reintegrated into the group. At present his health is said to be fine. The administration says that the safety of the animals is paramount and any unusual situation will be immediately intervened.
