Double the Trouble: How One Chinese Woman’s Unique Condition Led to a Family Where ‘Mom’ and ‘Dad’ Are Up for Debate! (Freepik)
Viral News: A Chinese woman's unusual family dynamic has recently captured attention on social media, stirring intrigue and curiosity. Liu, a resident of a small village in Bishan County, Southwest China, is a mother of two sons, but their names for her diverge significantly—one calls her "Mom," while the other refers to her as "Dad." This remarkable situation arises from Liu's unique medical condition: she possesses two reproductive systems.
According to the South China Morning Post, Liu's life took a strange turn at the age of 18 when she gave birth to her first son after marrying. Following the birth, she experienced a dramatic hormonal imbalance that led to an increase in androgenic hormones.
This hormonal change resulted in the growth of facial hair resembling that of a man and the development of male reproductive organs. Consequently, her husband Tang filed for divorce, unable to cope with the transformation.
After the divorce, Liu relocated to another district and began living life as a man. She found employment at a shoe factory and eventually fell in love with a woman named Zhou. However, since same-sex marriage is illegal in China, Liu's official identity remained that of a woman.
To navigate this situation, she persuaded her ex-husband Tang to allow her to marry Zhou under the pretense that it would legitimize their union and ensure financial support for their son's upbringing.
Years later, after living together, Zhou became pregnant and gave birth to another son. Now, Liu finds herself with two children who have different perspectives on their parental roles—one son calls her "Mom," while the other refers to her as "Dad." This complex family structure highlights the challenges and societal norms surrounding gender identity and family dynamics in contemporary China.
At 59 years old, Liu has yet to undergo gender reassignment surgery due to its high costs. Her identification documents still classify her as female. Liu's case is exceptionally rare and is medically recognized as ovotesticular disorder, a condition where an individual possesses both male and female reproductive organs.
