Tamil Nadu Political Crisis: Vijay’s Swearing-In Put on Hold as TVK Fails to Prove Majority (X)
Chennai: For actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay and his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which emerged as the largest party in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the dream has come "so close, yet so far." However, Governor RV Arleka refused the swearing in ceremony as the TVK still lacks a sufficient majority to form a government.
TVK had won 108 seats in the assembly elections and Vijay had claimed that he has the support of 118 MLAs, but according to sources in the Governor's office, he has the written support of only 116 MLAs.
According to sources, the Governor clearly said that without the support of 118 MLAs, no invitation will be given to form the government. Two potential allies, IUML and AMMK, categorically refused to support TVK.
On Friday, Vijay met the Governor and staked claim to form the government. However, just hours later, the IUML and TTV Dhinakaran's AMMK issued separate letters distancing themselves from the TVK-led alliance. The AMMK wrote to the Governor, urging him to give the AIADMK a chance to form the government.
The Left parties (CPI and CPM) have announced outside support to TVK, but will not join the cabinet. Five Congress MLAs also supported the party, but the total number did not reach 118.
Despite these challenges, TVK MLA Marie Wilso said, "Vijay will remain Chief Minister not only for the next five years but also for the next five years. We are confident. Some good news is expected by late tonight."
According to sources, TVK may now approach the court.
The Governor told Vijay that a government cannot be run with the support of 113 or 116 MLAs. No action will be taken without a written letter of support.
Uncertainty continues over government formation in Tamil Nadu. All eyes are now on the Governor's next move and a potential court battle.
