Chemistry of attachment, invisible spark: Why scent could decide your next love story? (x)

New Delhi: Many people, when it comes to love and attraction, think that it happens when they notice smile, confidence, or the way someone carries themselves. But no there is another very important thing that quietly plays a role, one that often goes unnoticed yet shapes how we feel about someone almost instantly.

It’s the scent and it may be doing more powerful work on your date than you realise.

Is attraction more than looks and conversation?

According to a 2018 study from the Perfume Society, nearly half, i.e. 43 per cent, of singles say the scent of a potential partner impacts the result of the date.

The experts say that attraction isn’t just about looks or conversation. Natural body scent and skin chemistry play a surprisingly powerful role in who we feel drawn to. This isn’t about strong fragrances or expensive colognes - it’s about subtle, almost subconscious signals your body gives off.

The study also says that about one in four, i.e. 26 per cent, people would prioritise smell over looks when sizing someone up. Among women, almost a third, i.e. 31 per cent are more likely to notice a man with a good scent than one with conventional good looks.

These signals are rooted in biology. Humans are believed to respond to scent cues that hint at compatibility, making someone feel instantly “right” without being able to explain why.

What do experts say?

Toby Branston, a spokesperson for Room Aromas, the UK's premier retailer of branded room aromas, while in an interview with the Times of India, said that, “People tend to underestimate how much scent influences attraction. Scent interacts with your natural chemistry and creates subconscious signals that draw people together.”

Does scent create a memory connection?

Scent doesn’t just spark attraction but it also helps build emotional bonds over time. Ever noticed how a familiar smell can instantly remind you of someone? That’s because scent is closely linked to memory and emotion.

Many people say that a partner’s natural scent can bring comfort, reduce stress, and create a sense of closeness, even in their absence. Over time, this connection becomes part of how we experience love itself.

According to a 1995 study published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, Claus Wedekind, Evolutionary Biologist (formerly at the University of Lausanne), said, “The results show that women consistently preferred the odours of men whose MHC genes differed from their own. This suggests that scent carries information about genetic compatibility. Such preferences may play an important role in human mate choice by promoting genetic diversity and potentially enhancing offspring health.”

Does it build a chemistry?

Romantic chemistry is often described as a “spark,” but it’s rarely random. Experts say it’s a mix of physical attraction, emotional connection, and shared comfort, with scent quietly tying it all together.

You might click with someone instantly, feel at ease in conversation, or sense a natural pull towards them. While personality and shared interests matter, that underlying chemistry often has a biological layer you can’t control.

In a 2021 Multisensory Research article, Charles Spence, Professor of Experimental Psychology and Head of the Crossmodal Research Laboratory at the University of Oxford, stated, "Intriguingly, judgments of beauty and charm were both enhanced by the presence of a gender-congruent fragrance. These results therefore indicate that the presence of an ambient gender-congruent perfume can impact positively on first impressions beyond attractiveness."
