J&K: Heaping praises on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for keeping his promise to conduct elections in the Union Territory, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday welcomed the Union minister who had come to inaugurate the Z-Morh tunnel. "After winning his third term, PM Modi participated in International Yoga Day in Srinagar where he assured people that elections will be held," he said. Within four months, polls were conducted, and a new government was elected. Today, as chief minister, I am here speaking to you."

Smooth and fair elections in Jammu and Kashmir

Abdullah showed high enthusiasm that was reflected through citizens' active participation in elections with no complains about rigging and misuse of power. Further, he felt elated about the statement of PM Modi to provide Jammu and Kashmir the status of state again: "I feel that this assurance too will be implemented, and once again, Jammu and Kashmir will turn into a state of this nation," he added.
The chief minister also credited PM Modi for advancing peace along the borders, which has greatly benefited remote areas like Machil, Gurez, Karnah, and Keran. "Due to the improved peace process, development and tourism in these regions have flourished, attracting more visitors and enhancing local livelihoods," he noted.

Z-Morh tunnel brings year-round connectivity

The celebration event also saw the inauguration of the 6.5 km Z-Morh tunnel in the Ganderbal district of Central Kashmir by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The cost of the tunnel has surpassed ₹2,700 crore and provides a road open for the entire year to the Sonamarg tourist resort, which has always been cut off during the winters.

The 7.5-metre wide emergency escape passage, equipped in the tunnel, would enable free travel by the residents as well as the tourists. "The people of the upper reaches need not descend to the plains again, as connectivity by roads would now be available throughout the year," said Abdullah.

Saluting workers martyred in terrorist attack

During his speech, Abdullah praised seven civilians killed by terrorists last year while they were working on the tunnel construction in Gagangir.
