Online scam (Social media)
Trending News: In today's era, online payments and digital banking have certainly made life more convenient, but they have also empowered scammers. One fake call, a deceptive message, and thousands of rupees can vanish from a person’s account in seconds. However, in a recent viral incident, the story took a surprising turn—where the scammer who set the trap ended up falling into it himself.
A now-viral video on social media shows a scammer calling a girl and introducing himself as someone known to her father. During the call, he claimed that her father had asked him to send ₹12,500 to her. To make the claim look legitimate, he sent a fake SMS designed to look like an official bank message, containing fabricated transaction details.
As the conversation continued, the scammer initiated his real plan. He claimed that he had mistakenly transferred ₹25,000 instead of the intended amount and now requested the girl to return the excess money. This is a common scam tactic—first establish trust, then claim an “accidental overpayment” and demand a refund, thereby cheating the victim out of real money.
But this time, the scammer was out of luck. The girl quickly caught on to his plan and flipped the game. Just as he had sent a fake bank SMS, she created her own fake message—this time showing a transfer of ₹22,500—and sent it back to the scammer.
She calmly told him that the refund had been processed. The moment the scammer realized he had been fooled, he panicked and began to stumble over his words. Without giving him a chance to recover, the girl disconnected the call.
The video was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by a user named @gharkekalesh and has since gone viral, garnering millions of views. Users across platforms praised the girl’s presence of mind and quick thinking. Comments poured in, with one user saying, “For the first time, a scammer got scammed,” while another joked, “Pyari turned out to be really smart!”
While this incident has a humorous tone, it also highlights the serious and rising threat of digital fraud. Scammers are now using increasingly sophisticated tactics—from fake bank messages to counterfeit QR codes and impersonated customer care numbers.
This viral episode is a timely reminder that a little awareness and smart thinking can go a long way in protecting yourself from digital fraud. In the world of online scams, staying alert is your strongest defense.a
